Note: Industrial Maintenance Training Update:
Re - Open plans for John Jay Industrial Maintenance Training
First of all, THANK YOU all for your patience. COVID-19 has affected all of us and we are slowly and safely trying to get back to normal, whatever normal will be going forward.
With that said, we are planning to re-open the John Jay Industrial Maintenance Training Center on a limited basis starting June 1st. This June 1st opening will have some provisions, which include:
Never has it been so important for students to reach out to instructors to schedule time in the lab. Students will be seen by scheduled appointment only. Instructor contact information is attached in the “SkillsTrac Welcome Letter” document.
We will offer a mix of in-person and virtual labs available. This is not our first choice, but it is the reality we are living in. This will give students the opportunity to have face-to-face labs or, if they are concerned about contact, a quality virtual experience as well.
LATE AFTERNOON/EVENING LABS
Brian Flick – instructor
FULL DISCLOSURE: Brian is a COVID-19 survivor. He tested positive in late early April and tested negative May 8th. Brian is safe to be around….in fact probably the guy you want to be around, as he has COVID-19 fighting antibodies now.
In-person instruction will be available Monday – Thursday, the 1st and 3rd week of each month (for example, the week of June 1st & June 15th). The lab will be open from 3:45pm – 6:30pm.
We will limit spacing in the lab for safety. Call Brian to schedule time in the lab.
Ray Lufkin – instructor
Because of Ray’s age, pre-existing health conditions, and distance he travels to Portland, we are moving more cautiously. The hope is to have Ray back in person sometime in July of 2020, but that is all dependent on safety and if the virus slows its spread.
Ray has developed virtual labs for SOME of the levels (obviously, labs like welding and others WILL NOT be offered virtually). With the help of Microsoft Teams and interactive lab books that have been developed, for the time being we will have the ability for Ray to be able to interact with students live as they work through some of these labs. Contact Ray to find out which labs are available virtually.
Students will be encouraged to use the John Jay lab space and computers to perform these virtual labs. It is not required to use our space though.
Please let us know how these virtual labs are working. The positive AND the negative. If it isn’t working, we will not continue labs in this fashion. A quality experience is our concern when it comes to virtual labs!
This is how we are going to do things, at least in the near future. Keep an eye out for future emails as we continue to open things up.
We are making every effort to make and keep the John Jay building, staff and patrons as safe as possible. Let common sense be your guide; if you don’t feel safe coming in to this building and performing the lab activities, that is OK. We will be here in the future, so come in when you feel safe.
As I have stated before SAFETY IS OUR PRIMARY CONCERN.
